Desde el Alma

Here is my translation of Desde el Alma, done in 2017. It is an artistic translation, meant to be sung, not meant to be a word-to-word translation. When translating songs you have to choose, you can always stick it in Google translate later. I would be happy if someone sung this, but please give credit if you use this version in performances. It is an honor to translate Rosita Melo's work, a female composer who wrote this at age 14, in 1911! My favorite version is sung by Nelly Omar. More often you hear the instrumental version at milongas, and many people think it is a very romantic song, which I find ironic, when the lyrics indicate it it clearly a break-up song.

¡Deja esas cartas!
Vuelve a tu antigua ilusión.
Junto al dolor
que abre una herida
llega la vida, trayendo amor.

Vives inútilmente triste
y sé que nunca mereciste
pagar con penas
la culpa de ser buena
tan buena como fuiste, por amor.

My love, just look how much they've hurt you
So why, why must you still remember?
Why don't you give up
in crying over your loss
and looking for what you've loved
and calling for what died

You live uselessly unhappy
and I know, know that you never deserved
paying with pain
the fault of being good
and how good you were, for love

Love, was once upon a time
But then, the fairytale fades
Finally, through no fault of your own
Midnight strikes the heart all alone

Stop, with those letters
Come back to the old dreams again
With the pain
Which opens old scars
life always returns, bringing another love

A pity, that you're so unhappy
Cause you are worth the best
Tears paid the price
the cost of being good
You were so good, in love!
