DWTS - Dancing with the Stars

I don’t often post DWTS clips, but this choreography was so fun and creative!

Professional dancer Gleb Savchenko and actress and singer Jana Kramer, dancing to Selena Gomez’s song “Can’t Keep my Hands to Myself”

The shower and bed references super creative!

Repost: COVID-19 Weakens Argentina's Tango Culture

“That feeling of embrace is what makes tango stand out from other dances,” - musician and dancer Nicolás Ponce

“For those of us who make a living from tango, our self-esteem is on the floor,” said Horacio Godoy, a dancer, historian and club organizer.

https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/covid-19-weakens-argentina-s-tango-culture/5930209.html

Debora Rey reported this story for the Associated Press. Caty Weaver adapted it for VOA Learning English. Mario Ritter, Jr. was the editor.

I know I’m late on reposting this, but someday we will all be looking back at this historical time. Hopefully, looking forward as well! Covd-19 is part of tango history now, but I don’t think tango will ever die out.

Repost: Neon Tango Dancers!

https://www.buffalorising.com/2021/07/neon-tango-dancers-will-return-to-their-rightful-home/

Also, I can’t tell you how fitting it is that the Tango society wants to restore it –and not just because of the obvious Tango billboard. The blue neon lines on the buildings were purposely designed to be of different lengths as well as at different heights from the ground. It’s more interesting from a design point of view, sure, but the concept was that the lines would represent a kind of ‘visual music’ as you looked, or drove, down Elmwood Avenue.

The blue neon created a visual rhythm… maybe even a Tango…

Repost: Learning Collaborative Decision-Making Through Argentine Tango With Ultimate Tango School of Dance

As a partner dance, Argentine Tango puts a lot of emphasis on creative leadership. However, leadership in dance is not simply about the Leader getting to call all the shots. Instead, it is about knowing exactly where the Follower is going and vice versa – synching one’s movements from there. This is also where mutual trust and respect comes into place.

“Do not micromanage your Follower. Propose the movement and let her excel,” says Anita Flejter, the spokesperson from Ultimate Tango School of Dance. Because at the end of the day, despite having a Leader and Follower, the dancers must shine as a couple, not as individual dancers – which adds sense to the popular saying, “it takes two to Tango.”

I love this!

First Monday in May - with Janelle Monáe

Janelle Monáe - at the 2019 Met Gala, Camp: Notes on Fashion. Dress by Christian Siriano, who said "It was kind of inspired by an abstract Picasso face painting."

Janelle Monáe, Tango Shoes, and Met Gala

My recommendation:
Comme il Faut - Terciopelo Multicolores

About this post: To celebrate the month of May, and Fashion, and Tango Shoes, I have prepared some posts with some of my favorite Met Gala looks, and what shoes would go best with them, if the celebrities had decided to go tango dancing afterwards. (And I mean, who wouldn't???)

#fashioninspo #metgala #fashioninspiration

I am not affiliated with either Comme il Faut or Lisadore, but I do recommend Lisadore, for their great shipping track record, and Comme Il Faut for their great quality tango shoes!

Celebrating May - Gigi Hadid

Gigi Hadid - This is one of my favorite dresses ever! By Versace, some say it is reminiscent of stained glass, others say it reminds them of angel feathers. Either way, I think it is one of the more stunning and creative dresses. 2018 Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. To go with it, I would recommend:

First Monday in May - Rihanna's iconic look, and some tango shoes for the 'afterparty'

Rihanna in one of the most iconic Met Gala looks *ever* for the 2015 Through the Looking Glass event, by Beijing-born designer Guo Pei.

"I felt like, 'I'm doing too much,'" Rihanna told Access Hollywood on Wednesday. "I was driving past the red carpet and I was just seeing gowns."

"I was like, oh my god, I'm a clown, people are gonna laugh at me," she added. "Finally, I was like, 'Whatever let's go, let's just go."'

By being brave and daring with her fashion choices, Rihanna became one of the most iconic emblems of fashion worldwide!

Celebrating May, Tango, and of course Nicki Minaj

My Hero is Nicki Minaj!

“I found the design process exciting,” she said. With a classic black and red combination, and showing off those stunning legs, she would fit in at any milonga. To pair with this one-of-a-kind H&M creation, which pays 'tribute to Minaj's love of Japanese fashion,' I would suggest these patent leather Red or Patent Leather Black strappy shoes, to accentuate the shiny black roses in the train.

Repost: Watch These Dancers Perform a Silent Tango in COVID Times

Hi Tango Friends!

As many other tango dancers did during the crazy covid times, sometimes I too buried myself under the covers and simply prayed for the spring awakening of tango to arrive once more. For that reason, I am catching up on some old news, but I thought I would document it here even if I’m a bit late. Someday, we will remember all of this.

Tango Film Recommendation: Tango Shalom

Repost: ‘Tango Shalom’ dances its way through cross-cultural tale of community, by Alexis Jones.

I can’t wait to see this film! If anyone has seen it, let me know in the comments!

“We had no idea that Moshe and Viviana’s dance numbers were going to turn out so passionate,” Zizi Bologna said. “Who knew that dance sequences where two people who cannot touch can be so sexy?

“It’s really great just to see the film received by so many different people,” Bologna said. “It just goes to show you that I think we’ve touched on something. We’ve made something universal, and we’re just excited about continuing the festival circuit.”

Repost: Argentina debates risks of tango in a pandemic

The Star, article by Florencia Martin

Covid 19 has been heartbreaking for the tango community. I have been strict about quarantining and not dancing, and so I agree with the stance Viola has taken. I am nonetheless saddened that so many dancers have had to debate this moral stance, and my heart goes out to the people that just couldn’t stay away, and therefore got sick.

I suppose the real reason I am posting this article, is that for better or worse, Covid19/the year 2020 is now a significant chapter in Tango History.

Stay safe tangueros and tangueras, this isn’t our last dance!

And please, DNI, reopen someday!!! I was heartbroken to learn of it’s closure.

Repost: Balls and Milongas in Vienna and Buenos Aires: analysis and comparison

Thank you to Stefano Elefante for sending this article my way. So fun to take a deep-dive into tango history!

We usually hear all about the milongas of Buenos Aires, but rarely the waltzes that were organized.

Copy and Paste this link: http://tangogroup.eu/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Balls_and_Milongas_in_Vienna_and_Buenos_Aires_Finale_V4.pdf

Since I enjoy translating tango lyrics, it was fun to read the authors’ interpretation of Vals del 18.

Higlights include:

  • Masked Balls!

  • Elegant Settings, in both Vienna and Buenos Aires

  • Dress code

Thanks for sending this my way Stefano, '“Let us both dance!”
